How long do active kefir grains last?

Kefir grains will last indefinitely with good care and techniques. Kefir grains are SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) where they are in constant state of reproduction. Some may get weaker over time for one reason or another (neglected, frozen, etc); nevertheless, as long as you properly feed and care for them, they will last forever.

Do kefir grains need to be fed every day?

The short answer is yes. Kefir grains are living organisms that need to be fed with fresh milk and strained within 24 hours. If you would like to take a break from making kefir, please follow the storage section.

  1. Freezing & Milk Powder (6 Month Storage)
  2. Dehydration & Air Drying (Long-Term Storage)
